Handwritten, 4-page letter, from James Dennis while in San Francisco. He writes briefly of his sea journey to California,
and then of San Francisco which he says is "quite dull here at present," but later notes that "this Place is growing fast
there is sum [sic] of the largest Brick Buildings...it is a great Deal larger then Providence is that it will be the bee [sic]
the largest setty [sic] in the world." Regarding mining, there is little progress as there has not been any rain for awhile.
There is a significant amount of inquiries after family and friends, with small sections to certain relatives, such as the
part to Miss Sarah Rice advertising California as a place with "a grate [sic] Rich old Batchlers [sic] that i am shur [sic]
would be glad to have her." Envelope included, addressed to Pawtucket, Massachusetts, with a "Paid 3 cts" stamp.
Handwritten 1-page letter from George B. Day while in Coloma, California. He says that he cannot write much as "time is short,"
only mentioning that he has sold his horse for a mule team for his journey from Sacramento to Coloma, and that family members
are with him. He asks to have his respects given "to all inquiring friends and especily [sic] the gals, and boys if you like"
